I used to like Eli more than I do now, but it was never a favorite. It sounds sneaky and dishonest, somehow, even though I have never met an Eli or know of any famous crooked Elis.
It seems a big leap to use Eli to honor Elizabeth. The names have nothing at all to do with each other besides the first three letters; it makes no more logical sense than to say you're honoring Mary by naming your son Mark. You'd do better to ask Elizabeth herself to choose the middle name, or use Elizabeth's maiden or married last name if you want to honor her that way.
