I think Bess on its own would be fine. Annabess just makes me think of an abbess.

I love Bess and Bessie too! They are no more bovine to me than Elsie is. Elsie is beginning to shake off the cow thing, at least on these boards. So maybe Bess and Bessie's day will not be far behind. :-)

Its not too bad in the sense that it doesn't sound too dissimilar to Anabel, Isabel, etc. But the fact that it sounds too much like Cannabis to me, puts me off.

I think of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess - the Opera - when I see that name, because my uncle has been performing as Porgy or Crown for decades :)

I can see the appeal of Bess or Bessie as a nickname. I think Annabess sounds horrible and will always be confused for Annabeth. Now I think Elisabeth nickname Bess or Bessie could work and would be cute.
