At first, I was not happy that they chose to omit the O. But the family said that they chose it because that's the way it was spelled in their Bible (not sure which translation). Since then, I've found a Phebe in my genealogical research, and have warmed up to it a bit more.

I instantly thought: Eek! It's short for Ephebe.

Prime case of needless dumbing-down. Dumbing-down insults the public by assuming they are ineducable.

I don't like Phoebe at all, but I prefer it by miles to Phebe. Phebe looks like it should be pronounced like 'feeb'.

I like it. If I remember right that's the way it was spelled in "As You Like It". I think it's pretty and cute; makes me think of a shy but fun-loving person.

I also know a Pheaby. I like that too, although it's probably more of a GP spelling.

I don't hate it, but I do feel like the name is cheapened without that O. It's not nearly as appealing, visually, as Phoebe.

My niece is a Phoebe, and my brother and SIL have been surprised by how many people try to spell it Phebe. They call Phebe the "Phoebe For Dummies" version. I think that's a bit harsh since the spelling has some history (Shakespeare, the bible, our own family tree), but I get their point. Phebe does seem a bit like a stab-in-the-dark spelling by someone who has never seen Phoebe in print.

Well... I mean, it wasn't her choice to spell it that way. It was her parents'. I do prefer Phoebe, because it is the standard spelling and has a ring of class about it. Also it doesn't make you think "MODERNTRENDYMODERN" like, say, Addieysun does. It also doesn't seem ancient, like Ermengarde. It just seems like a girl who is very self-possessed, strong, and classy. If I had only heard it, I would have liked it, but the spelling IS a little out there.

It gives me visions of somebody typing too fast and forgetting an o.
