Ursula

The lovely Ursula Andress aside, I've always found the name to be quite ponderous and lacking in elegance. This was before The Little Mermaid, btw.

How did I not see this thread yesterday? I am besotted with the name Ursula! I would seriously consider it for a dd if I were to have any. Bears and bear-like names are a plus with me. And Ursula is sooo gorgeous sounding.
I think of sexy Ursula Andress and not so sexy Ursuline nuns when I think of the name. It's quite a juxtaposition of associations. But that's just another reason why I love Ursula: magic happens around her.
:-D

It's not very attractive in my mind and wouldn't be even w/out the Little Mermaid association. The fact that its potential nn Ushi means cow in Jpns. doesn't help it any either.
Sorry but I think it's awful, really unattractive and clunky. I don't know of it's the U.at the beginning or the fact that it makes me think of bears, but something about it really turns me off.
I think Ursula is nice too. I do tend to think of the sea witch from The Little Mermaid, but I still like it!
Ursula is one of my favorites. It reminds me of a Celtic warrior queen (though I know it's not a Celtic name and I honestly don't know where this connotation came from). I think it's the meaning (little bear) that makes me think of a strong but feminine woman. It has a beautiful, old-world feel to it that I love. I've never associated it with vomiting at all.
I would consider it for a middle name but not for a first name. There's the Little Mermaid reference, the George of the Jungle character and there's also an Ursula in a raunchy, somewhat obscure movie called Supertroopers. Unfortunately many people I know would quote one particular line from that movie whenever they heard the name Ursula... and it's not the nicest thing to say.

I do associate it with The Little Mermaid and the George of the Jungle movie but I remember watching George of the Jungle as a little kid and thinking Ursula was such an unfortunate name - that may have been influenced by the Little Mermaid. No matter what I can't find anything I like about it. I feel that way about most U names but Ursula sounds gravely and starts out sounding like dry-heaving.
Ursula has been one of my favorite names since childhood, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's what I end up naming my daughter (should I ever have one). The first time I heard it was, in fact, in "The Little Mermaid," and the fact that it was the villain's name didn't deter me at all from liking it - although when I told my mom (when I was little) that Ursula was my favorite name, she remarked that I was a "very strange child." :-)
I don't know why the name appeals to me so much. Maybe I like the fact that it starts with a 'U', and so few names do. It also sounds rather regal to my ears, so that helps. In another movie that I loved when I was a kid, "George of the Jungle" (with Brendan Fraser), the socialite heroine's name is Ursula Stanhope, and she's played by Leslie Mann and is really funny, which made me like the name even more.
As much as I love, love, love Ursula, though, it's really difficult to find a middle name to go with it. I've tried Caroline, Catherine, Clarisse, Constance, Florence, Frances, Josephine, Juliet, Lee, Lysandra, Maeve, Maude, Miranda, Pearl, Scarlett, Sophia, Violet, Vivian, Willow, Xanthe, and Zoe (the longest-lasting one) as middle names, always bouncing around.

I always forget about the Little Mermaid character until she's brought up in Ursula threads. My main Ursula association is the Ursuline order of nuns and the stories my mom would tell me about her Catholic school childhood.
The sound of Ursula is like that deep-belly dry heaving you do when you're desperately ill, and there's something squat, hirsute, and graceless about it. So, it's all vomity sounds and dancing bears to me, and it ranks pretty high on my list of least faves. I know it has its admirers, but I just don't get the attraction. I have tried.

I know a very nice Ursula, she's maybe 40? But I don't like the name at all. It's cold and unattractive and you kind of make a sour mouth saying it.
