I adore Martin, but loathe Y spellings.

I can't see why either. No need for a Y.

For a boy or a girl?För a boy, I prefer Martin and for a girl, I prefer Martina or Martine (French pronounciation)."But it’s all right now.

So you got to please yourself."

It's not kre8tiv! (Edited to add a thought)It's the Welsh spelling, and I think it's wonderful if you're Welsh. If you're not, then I'd steer away from it solely because, yes, the Y does look rather kre8tiv.EDIT: Reading over the other replies, my hatred for randym kre8t--er, kre8tyv Ys has really increased. Many people seem to assume Martyn's somehow kre8tyv, just because of the Y... but it's the legitimate, correct male Welsh/Ukrainian form of Martin! But by the same token, I must admit that, currently, I wouldn't use Martyn if my child wasn't Welsh or Ukrainian, or for that matter Justyna if she weren't Polish. The mistaken belief that these names are kre8tyv is just too apparently widespread. :-(This kre8tyv randym Y trend has got to end imo, lest more legit names get lumped into "kre8tyvytee". Gah!

Fine if you're Welsh or Ukrainian thenB/c then Martyn is not creative but authentic."But it’s all right now.

I love the spelling Martyn. It's not especially new or kre8iv ... Even boring old Oxford lists it :-)_____________________________________________________________________Elinor

I don't like it at all. This is how the character's name is spelled in "The Hole." It is a book, and a movie with Keira Knightley. I much prefer the spelling Martin, although I don't care for the name too much, anyway.

Terrible.

The spelling is dreadful... Martin is nmsaa but at least bearable when spelled correctly."We can even learn from our enemies." -OvidMitakuye Oyasin

It look feminine but Martin is so not a feminine name. The Y makes it look horrible

I hate it, too. What's wrong with the original spelling - Martin?

I don't care for it either. The 'y' looks so random in this name. Martin isn't one of my favorites anyway, but when spelled with an 'i' at least I think it's tasteful and I can respect it. But the 'y'... I don't like that at all.

I agree with you. Don't care much for the name at all, anyway.
