Shirley
This has started to sound really fresh and modern to me for some reason. Most Shirleys should be in their 70s and I wonder whether people will use it to honor their grandmothers. So I'm wondering whether it's ready for a comeback in the next 10 years or so. I think Shirley is really cute. I like it paired with classics such as Shirley Isabelle, Shirley Lydia or Shirley Amelia.

My mom's name is Shirley and she was named after her aunt. In spite of being named after an aunt she loved dearly, my mom never liked her name. I've never been too fond of it myself. If it comes back into fashion, it won't be for another 15 years at least, judging from the typical girls' names 100 year trend.

I could see Shirley becoming quietly fashionable again - I dig it. The youngest one I ever met was in her fifties.

Yeah I am actually a bit surprised that Shirley isn't catching on with more vintage-loving parents. It's got the same sort of sensible wartime elegance as Lucille and Lillian which seem to be gaining in popularity. Although when you look at how the popularity over time looks, Lucille and Lillian do match up more. Shirley had that huuuuge spike in the 30's. My grandma is a Shirley (still alive). I've never thought about honouring her but if I was to do it, I'd pair Shirley with something snappy and jazzy. She used to be a jive dancer so, I'd use something that channels some energy, to keep it fresh. Maybe something unisex even. Like...Shirley Ava
Shirley Kate
Shirley June
Shirley Rita (Rita's also my great-grandmother's name. she's also still alive)
Shirley Violet
Shirley Piper
Shirley Quinn - heck yeah that's cute
Shirley Blythe
Shirley Harlow? Just pile more retro star's names on there
Shirley Monroe yeah
Shirley Allyson
Shirley Arden
Shirley Cyd
Shirley Greer? ugh
Shirley Ginger?! lol this is falling apart. Honestly I'd put it in the middle though not up front. I keep wanting to do Zoe Shirley which is terrible and I'm not sure what that's all about.

I think it's really old ladyish. Sorry.

I knew a Shirley, now in her fifties, with a sister named Wendy!Shirley Joanna is good, I think. But I always associate it with cats, probably because of the Shir-purr rhyme.

Shirley is a kind of rough area in the town where I live. I know one woman called Shirley who is in her 40s but she's not the sort of person you'd want to be named after! Also it makes me think of sherbet. All in all, I don't like it.

Meh, I've always found Shirley to be really nicknamey and unattractive.

As I said yesterday, there's a little Shirley at my daughter's school, she's about eight. Cute Jamaican girl. I have no idea if she's named after anybody. I think Shirley has a chance at revival, but not a real big one and not for quite a while yet.
