Melpomene
This name has been stuck in my head SO hard the past couple days, and I'm not even sure where I first heard it. So now I'm just curious as to whether you think it would work IRL. Also, how do you pronounce it and how do you like it in general?

I pronounce it mel-po-may-ney. I think it's better as the name of a mountain or a river than the name of a girl. Too long.
Hmm I don't know if I like it or not. I don't like the "lp" part, as it looks awkward. The "pom" sound makes me think of apples and I don't like Mel as a nickname. However, there's something I like about it!
I say it phonetically: MEL-pom-een

I'd guess mel-po-MEEN and think "skin condition?"
:)
I think I won't like it regardless of how it is pronounced, since I think it looks really odd.

I pronounce it mel-PAH-m(schwa)-nee. It has some sentimental value to me because of the music fraternity I was in in college. I think it would be a bit much on a real person, but at least she could be called Mel!
I named a grumpy pegasus Melpomene in a story when I was eleven, and I always think of her when I hear this name. :D Pegasi aside, I've always liked the sound of it, and I think it could work IRL.
I say mel-po-MEE-ne in Swedish by old habit, but I suspect it really should be mel-POM-e-nee, like Penelope or Persephone, which also sounds better in English.
