Marlena or Marcella?
Which do you prefer?

Marcella
I like both of them, but I slightly prefer Marcella. I actually prefer Marceline and Marcelina / Marcellina to Marcella. I like all three of the different Marlena pronunciations and if you were to ask me to choose I wouldn't be able to.
Marcy, Cella, Ella, and Ellie are cute nn's for Marcella. Marlie / Marley, and Lena are cute nn's for Marlena. Mari is a cute nn that would work for both of them. I guess Marlie would work as a nn for Marcella also but it is more of a stretch. Macy also would work as a nn for Marcella but is a little bit of a stretch.
Marcelina / Marcellina could use all of those nn's; Mari, Macy, Marcy, Marlie / Marley, Cella, Ella, Ellie, and Lina. All those nn's work for Marceline but Lina is more of a stretch. Truthfully Marceline is probably my favorite even more than Marcelina.

WFE!
I literally just finished reading "Water for Elephants" when I saw this post! One of the main characters is Marlena.
But that said I really do prefer Marcella. Marlena seems stodgy and old. And I don't like the "marl" sound. But Marcella is divine and sexy and spunky.

Marlena.
Maybe because I actually know one but it is more elegant, soft and pretty to me.
Marcella feels a bit harsh.

Marcella. It's absolutely beautiful.
My mom was addicted to the soap Days of Our Lives growing up so Marlena will always seem a bit tragically over the top to me.

they're both pretty...
But if I had to choose I'd pick Marlena.

Marlena.
If I had to describe them, I'd say Marlena is the wicked witch-queen you can't help liking, and Marcella is the princess who's theoretically the main character but is either too prissy or too much of a Mary Sue to be likable.
ETA: I like mar-LAY-na best, or mar-LENN-a, but I don't like mar-LEE-na.
ETA again: If you use mar-LAY-na, a nickname can be Lena, which is awesome because it fits with the whole name but has a totally different vibe at the same time. Lena is more like a sweet little girl name, although it fits all ages well.
