Max?

Using just Max is the best way to use it IMO. Why elaborate. It's not really more informal than Jack, and elaborating Max to Maximilian or Maximus or whatever seems as goofy to me as elaborating Jack to Jackson. It doesn't add any depth, it just weights it down. Max is a fine short name, just as it is. Max Charles is great! I'd use that.
It works; it's a an open, friendly, solid sort of name. I do prefer some longer forms myself, but I wouldn't meet a Max and feel he'd been short-changed in the name department, though I would hope he had a distinctive middle name to go with.
Yeah, I thought of it as overused for a long time. But then my significant other said he likes one-syllable names and I remembered hearing a punk-ish version that my brother's friends used: "Max Chaos." Now it just sounds cool. Reminds me of Max Headroom, too, I guess.
So I am kind of settled on Max Charles for now.
Our favorite girl name is Zoe Cecelia. I do worry a little that Max and Zoe are going to sound extra "dated" together, but perhaps the simplicity of the names trumps my other worries for now.
