Alma is very southern to me - and it was looooong before Brokeback. My Gramma is part of a knitting circle and THREE of the ladies are named Alma. Personally, I'm not ready to see this name on children and, imo, it's not as pretty as other similar names like Emma, Ella, Ally, etc...
