Which do you prefer? Combos welcome.

Harriet by miles. Hester reminds me of festering wounds.
Oh, Team Hester all the way for me. Something so delightfully witchy and New England-esque is right up my alley!
some combos that come to mind:
Hester Victoria
Hester Isabel
Hester Sarah
Hester Jane
Hester Lauren
Hester Catherine
Hester Juliet
Hester Christina
Hester Veronica
Hester Abigail
Hester Diana
yes, there's something very poetic and wistful-strong about Hester. A witch indeed.

Neither is all that appealing to me, but I'd choose Harriet...probably. Hattie is a cute nickname.
Hester, 100%. Hester isn't my favourite but it's a pretty ivy green, lovely in an awkward way. Harriet sounds like coughing up a hairball or something.
So I like Hester Ivy a lot. Some other combos for Hester:
Hester Jean
Hester May
Hester Lotte
Hester Iseult
Hester Francine
Hester Eluned
Hester Rosalind
Hester Irene
Hester Dove
Hester Blanche
Hester Apolline
Hester Isibéal
Hester Bryony
Hester Marie
Hester Anne
Hester Thomasin
Hester Loveday
Hester Fredegonde
Hester Josiane
Hester Ottilie
Hester Evelyn
Hester Eugenie
Hester Euphrasie
Hester Violet
Hester Olwen
Hester Kate

Definitely Hester. It's softer, feminine, and has a nice, organic feel to it.
How about...
Hester Rose
Hester Miriam
Hester Miranda
Hester Juliet
Hester Eve

I would go with Harriet. I would use the nickname Hattie, which I think is adorable.
The H sound in Hester makes the name unappealing, but I don't mind the -ester part. If it were Esther vs. Harriet, I would choose Esther.
Combos:
Harriet Pearl
Harriet Diana
Harriet Josephine
Harriet Doris
Harriet Theodora
Harriet Jamesina
Harriet Cordelia
Harriet Clementine
Harriet Susannah / Susanna
Harriet Georgia
Hester Naomi
Hester Fiona
Hester Claudia
Hester Diana
Hester Josephine
Hester Camille
Hester Jamesina
Hester Clotilda
Hester Cordelia
Hester Caroline
Hester Beatrice
Hester Thomasina

At first I thought your post might be about a dogfight.
I think I'd rather be Harriet, if the devil gave me this choice.
I'm kidding, they're not THAT bad. They're sturdy and dignified names. But I can only get a certain amount serious over the idea of using them.
Hester feels to me like hiss and hex and fester and Hessians and heckling. Sounds bitter and malicious.
Harriet, like hair-rats and harridan and harried - sounds pedestrian and threadbare.
I am sure that if I had ever known real people with these names, I'd have more imagination for how they might seem nice. But having lived this long without ever meeting anyone with these names, I think I've long felt that they were basically too frowzy and antiquated and just plain ugly to be usable. I imagine I'm not the only person who feels this way, so I thought I'd throw my opinion in just for balance, even though you're obviously looking for the opinions of those who think these clunkers have some appeal.
Seriously combos..
Harriet Jane, Harriet Kallisto
Hester Alexandra, Hester Dahlia

As lovely as Harriet is, I have recently fallen head over heels for Hester. Hester is stodgy, but energetic at the same time -- an irresistable combination for me. It also has a slightly witchy vibe that I'm drawn to. I can see Hester making a comeback among the Hugo and Hazel, hipster crowd.

It pleases me that you like Hester. I find her so urbane and irresistibly sleek.
Prefer Harriet.
