Winifred
So I cannot say Winifred is a favorite of mine but it is SO's Grandmothers name. He would love to use something to honor her but neither of us like Winifred itself.Any ideas for how to honor Winifred nn Winnie?

What about Frederica? that's got the fred part...or Freda. Freda is really cool. Or Gwen, which is related to Winifred. Gwen Frederica would actually be a really unique combo. It has such a strong energy.Edit - oh I see everyone is suggesting the same thing, lol! Anyways, I personally think Gwen Frederica is super awesome. I love it. Way to go me.

I adore Winifred. Since it comes from Gwenfrewi, which contains elements meaning "white, fair, blessed" (the Gwen part) and "peace" (the latter part), technically, a "Gwen" name and a name meaning, or symbolizing, "peace" could be an approximation of Winifred. Something like Gwendolen Irene or Gwen Olivia? Wendy is another idea; it has some of the sounds Winifred has and has an old usage possibly related to the "Gwen" names.Personally, I would use Winifred as a middle name if honoring was really important, especially if Winifred is living and unlikely to view an approximation as an honor.

Winnie might give you Winona, I suppose. Or you could find names you like with more-or-less equivalent meanings. But I'd be inclined to use Winifred as a mn, or if necessary as a second mn.

I love Winifred and everyone's suggestions (especially Frederica / Freda!). But I had one more thought to toss out there. If Winifred originally came from Gwenfrewi, how about just Gwen? It can stand on its own as a name, first or middle. But I'm still pulling for Frederica ("freh-DREE-cuh"), nn Freda. :-D

First of all, I adore Winifred, so much so that it may be my favorite female name.Although I think the best way of honoring someone through naming is to use the person's name without adulterating it, Wynne, Freda, and Frederica could theoretically honor a Winifred.

Winter or Winona come to mind. Or just Wynne.

The Win part could give you:
Winter
Winona
Wynne
Guinevere
Olwen
Elowen
BronwenOr the Fred part:
Freda/Frida/Freida/Frieda
Frederica
Alfreda
Edwina

For a girl?
Winter would be lovely I think. Freda would work too if you're not into the Winnie part of her name.

For a girl, Freda/Frida or Wynne would work (Wynne is a totally different name, FYI). Alternately, Winifred means "friend of peace", so maybe choose a name with a similar meaning.
