Bree
We wanted to name our newest daughter Bree, but got so many stupid comments about Brie cheese that we just couldn't go through with it. What do you think? Simple and Pretty or cheese?

I like it, despite the Desperate Housewives connection and the Cheese connection.

I love it as a nn for Brianna, Brielle, Briella, Gabrielle, Gabriella, etc. But as a name by itself I'm not to fond of it. The cheese thing wouldn't bother me though.

maybe Bray, it's simple like Breee but doesn't have all the cheese and desperate housewives associations
in the end though, it's your choice, there's much worse things in this world to be named then Bree.

Bray is also the sound a donkey makes :(
Cheese..wihtout a doubt
It is only after all, me. Mel
I like Bree, it doesn't make me think of cheese at all. Its pretty popular where I'm from (I have known abotu 3 or 4 Brees over the yers, one was Bree-Anne) My sister's name is Briana and her nn is Bree. :)

Too Desperate Housewives
which means it will date her dreadfully. The cheese thing is very obvious too, but secondary to the uptight housewife imo.

Cheese
Cheese
Although I admit Bree is slightly better than Brie, the cheese's actual spelling.
Go with Gabrielle, and you can nn her Brie amongst your family. But at school or wherever, she can go by Gabrielle, Gabby, or Elle if she wants, and thus can avoid the potential cheese teasing.

yeah, but...
Yes but Brie, as a cheese, is really rather posh... do most kids even KNOW there is a cheese called Brie? Because I certainly didn't until I was about 12...
And I think that Bree is a common nn for all the full names everybody listed that there shouldn't be a problem if a girl is just named Bree and nothing else.
Personally, I don't like the name in general. It's preppy imo.

Yes.
Brie isn't posh at all. You can buy a sack of a dozen "baby Bries" from Wal-mart. It's a totally mainstream kind of cheese, if you want to think of it it those terms.

Yes, they do, where I live
But I still think it's rather nice.

I like it . . .
. . . but Bree is a VERY common name in Australia, far more common than it is in the US, so we're used to it here. I don't think any of the girls named Bree that I've met got much cheese-related teasing at all.

My sister (Briana, nn Bree) and I were in the supermarket a few weeks ago and I said to her that I needed to buy some Brie cheese and she said "cool, I have cheese named after me" I really don't think people with the name Bree would get teased, not here anyway. :)
