Even though Ayla of Earth's Children (the series' name) is the Queen of Published Mary Sues, I still like the name. I do think it sounds trendy, but it's not popular yet, so it's alright to me. And trendy -la names at least have the benefit of sounding far less cutesy to me than trendy -lee/-leigh/-ley/etc. or -lyn/-lynn/etc. names.
But, just to avoid the taint of Sueage, I'd specifically take Ayla from the Jewish or Turkish origins for my daughter.

I see your point about the "Sueage," and the potential popularity and trendy feel. I would never use the name on a real person for that reason.
The book association comes first to me as I have all the books in the series, and that's where I first heard the name.
