Re: Nancy & Louise

Nancy is my mother and sister-in-law's name. (Both use it as a nn for Anna and Ann, respectively.) So I'm biased. But I love retro names and Nancy has spunk. I also am waiting for the nn Nan to come back into fashion. I may have a long wait there . . . . (sigh)
Louise is that same sister-in-law's mn. (Ann Louise, nn Nancy.) Although this time I don't feel biased because I never use her mn. Louise never used to appeal to me. I was more comfortable with her sunnier cousin, Louisa. But then I listened to a book on tape, "Warrior Queens," by Antonia Fraser. Queen Louise of Prussia and her spirited defense in the face of Napoleon's advance was news to me. It made me love the name from that point on. I realize in German there are probably three syllables, not two. But the narrator used two and so I ran with it. Louise would be very refreshing, as a fn.
