Max
Do you think Max is too common or insubstantial? Opinions?

Nah, it's fine. Macsen & Maximilian and Maxwell are all fine too, but I quite like just Max - we've got a 14-yr-old Max in our family. I've only heard of one other irl, so I don't think it's that common.
I know close to 10 Max's. I don't think it's insubstantial, although I would use it as a nn for a longer name, such as Maxen, Maximillian, Maxwell or Maximus.
I like it, but am bugged by the fact that technically it's a nickname. However, I don't really like any of the possible full names (Maximilian, Maxim, etc)
I only know of two offhand...
One is a friend of my stepfather, a guy in his fifties, I think. The other is one of twins of somebody I used to work with. His twin sister is Bella. *gag*
To me Max is a yuppie kind of name, but first and foremost it's a dog name. "Sit, Max! Good boy!" Come to think of it, Max and Bella sound like a pair of puppies.

Originally I did think this was too insubstantial, but I really dislike Maximillian and I'm struggling to warm up to Maxwell. In the end I decided to just put Max on my list and have a longer middle name with it (I chose Emerson). It is a little common but too much so, not around where I am anyway.
DH and I both love the name Max. We like the simplicity of it, but both feel it's strong and substantial at the same time. It's super popular here in Australia though, which puts me off a little. We also love the name because of the tv show "Get Smart", as we're big fans of the show!
I think it's too horrible and ugly................ but not common or insubstantial. I like it on its own more than with any fuller name. But then again, I absolutely hate it.
I prefer Max as a nn for Maxine or Maxwell, etc depending on the gender but it works as a full name for a boy. It makes me think of Mad Max. Max is the most common name for a dog or at least it use to be a few years ago but I do feel it still works as a name for a human. The name isn't that common for human males in the US, it's barely in the top 100.
Personally I'm not super in love with the male Max names but I do like Maxwell, Maximilian, Maximus, etc. I just prefer the female name Maxine with the nn Max.
Someone once thought my partners brother Max was a girl. She was an old woman, so maybe her eye sight wasn't very good. Max had long hair at the time but his face wasn't feminine looking and he was looking straight at her right in front of her, that's why I suspect she couldn't see well.
