Valeria and Valentina
Valeria and Valentina have been sounding very attractive to me lately. WDYT of them? Which do you prefer? I'm worried that Valeria sounds a little too close to malaria for people's liking. What's your first association with it?Also what would you think of Carthage as a boy's name?

I love Valentina! It's beautiful and romantic and one of the strongest names I can think of. For me it's almost a perfect name except it's kind of long and would probably get shortened, and I don't like Val or Tina.Valeria is pretty and airy but next to Valentina it just feels washed out. Valentina is blood red and Valeria is a kind of faded pink. In Russian Valeria has the beautiful diminutive Lera, which I like loads better than the full name.It doesn't make me think of malaria so much, but I can see it. I don't know any Valerias so my only association is like, Valeria Messalina. Oh, and Valentina and Valeria both remind me of the word valour. I think I prefer Valerie to Valeria, it avoids the malaria association and is more dark and subdued. To be honest I think Carthage sounds a bit silly as a first name. It just doesn't have that quality to it, it's so strongly identified as a place name. I don't find it attractive anyway.

I'll be completely honest, I don't like Valeria or Valentina. I find Valeria to be very harsh (even if it didn't remind me of malaria) and there's just something that I don't like about Valentina that I can't put my finger on (although I absolutely adore the name Valentin for a boy). But if I had to pick, I would definitely go for Valentina.
As for Carthage, well it isn't really my style but it's certainly unique, which I like ;)

Yup, malaria is definitely my first thought with Valeria. :( But Valerie is nice. Valentina is a little over-the-top for my personally, but I'd have nothing against someone else using it. Carthage for a boy is pretty cool. And gutsy. I'd have respect for someone who used it!

Carthage is a little out there for a fn. As a GP mn it could be fun. :-)Valeria is beautiful. I was on another site and most responses did object to the similarity in sound to malaria. Personally, I think of an ancient Roman woman, not malaria. But I fear I'm in the minority.Valentina is rising in popularity, at least anecdotaly. We have a large Russian population where I live so that could be skewing my perception. But I see it get good reviews on this board and others. It has a Disney princess feeling that I think goes over well at the moment with the general population. Valentina Esme is my stock combo for her.
