Re: Paris

Paris is too place-name-y for me, made worse since I've been well acquainted with the city since my parents decided holidays in France were a good way to introduce their children to the world and get us learning French. Weekend breaks with some family friends were a bit of a tradition.
I do think familiarity with a place makes place-names more place-name-y. Much like I'd never use Devon, Kent or London, I wouldn't use Paris, Berlin or anything like that, because they're too place-y - but Dakota, Virginia, China, hell, even Washington are, without argument, decidedly place-names... but for me, they still seem place-namey and I don't like them any more than I like Paris or London, but they lack the strong vibe places I have personal associations with have. I guess personal association makes them seem even odder on a person.
Weirdly, I like Paris more on a boy. Paris on a girl? Francophile parents or trashy bimbo socialite. Paris on a boy? Francophile parents or a mythological history. Paris was a jerkwad, but wasn’t everyone in Greek mythology, more or less? I don’t really like it either way.
Ooh, a quick wiki search tells me that there’s a whole world of Paris associations out there – it doesn’t make it any less place-namey for me.
