Vergil is one of those names I want to like, just because of its historical connections, but can't. It keeps bringing to mind an elderly farmer. Maybe if I say it enough to myself I'll come round to liking it.

VIRGIN.That's the first thing that comes to mind. I would avoid it.

I prefer it spelled Virgil, but I kinda like it. It sounds very polished and charming.

It has a terrible sound, like an upset stomach gurgling and vergiling along.

I prefer Virgil - there's no good reason to use the -e- spelling. It is quite simply never used as a given name where I live, so I've only got American references in my head. Wasn't there a Virgil Someone who was an astronaut? No doubt a suitable namesake! And of course the poet, who will always be one of my top favourites. His unquestioning patriotism and total identification of the good of his country and the will of the gods have some interesting echoes to this day.

I actually think Vergil works better as a spelling because it distances the name from "virgin", even if it's just a little bit.
