Veronica, hands down (includes cute nicknames).

I've never liked "Sam" - not for Samuel, Samantha, nor any similar name. I don't know what it is about "Sam" that irks me so much, but I don't like it.
Veronica has always been, to me, a "cool" name. It's kind of long and has lots of history, but also isn't super-elegant or "liquid-sounding." It's spunky, and a girl can have it her whole life (it ages well).
I knew two Veronicas in high school, one Hispanic (Argentinian) and the other African-American and Brazilian. The first went by Vero (with a rolled 'r'), and the latter went by Veva (pronounced like "Viva").
