I like Leo, but I don't like Leonardo.
It sounds very Italian; I would find it strange on someone who wasn't Italian.
What about other Leo- names like Leonard or Leonid? Otherwise, I think Leo works fine as a full name, it doesn't have to be a nickname.
p.s. Also it makes me think of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (!).
