Re: Alternate/Random Top 20
Melanie - Can't love it for some reason... maybe it's a little too smooth or something? But there's nothing wrong with it, and I can appreciate it in a sort of.... oversmooth but sturdy way
Cecily - Good. Sorta forces you to be delicate. There's nothing you can really emphasize about this name - if you bring out its most defining elements, it just becomes more straw-y and laid back. It's also fashionable in a boring way. But it's pretty and I like the entire Cecil- family
Bedelia - I only see this in connection to Amelia Bedila
Simone - Hate it, somehow. Used to love it, now absolutely hate it. Also I saw a really dreadful performance by Simone Dinnerstein, this pianist that Oprah likes because she's a woman. She pronounced it Simona, which, well, annoyed me, and put me off of both pronunciations.
Margot - I like Margo better, but I definitely like it. A nice modernly fashionable thing, Margaret meets Harlow. I would happily nickname a Margaret "Margo." I also like Marlow in this way, I knew a quirky Marlowe about my age (female). I do not, however, like Marley as a modern take on Margaret.
Nina - Very good and I'd love to meet one.
Parisa - I know a Parisa who's a total brat. Or was when my sister was friends with her stepsisters. She's probably normal now. Umm but yeah it's pretty, just really tied to her in my mind
Saskia - One of those names I don't know of outside of BTN. It's cool. Very... I dunno, skirt-swishy. It's a cool combination of, like, maracas and Germanicity.
Aviva - It's fine, pretty corny
Clarity - Can't get into it. Seems self-consciously perfectly fitting every sensible-yet-quirky trend right now.
Johanna - Leaves me cold
Liana - Ewwie
Linnet - Really nice, better than Linnea
Matea - It's all right. I do think I like Mattea more. I think I like this better than similarly corny names like Liana and Linnea because Ms are so heavy to me that the M balances out the very light rest of the name.
Annette - It's cool. I know an Annette about my age. It's clumsy, though, isn't it, all those ns and ts. Not for me.
Nadine - Also cool. Was there a twin peaks character named this? Yes. Cool anyway. lol
Rhiannon - eh. "Tacky" is my reaction
Celeste - Nice. Used to hate it because it's super syrupy sweet. Now I like it because that doesn't bother me as much anymore, and it makes me think of the stars, and celestas, and, like, popes
Colette - Super pretty. Very few complaints.
Corinne - undercooked and hardened brown rice with no seasoningRhys - Super boring. Get off the boards, Rhys!
Murray - Uggers and I think of Flight of the Concords Murray. Endearing as he was...
Asher - Very bad. Corny, neo-biblical, yuppie, not-exactly-new. Off the boards, Asher!
Brendan - Used to hate, now I like it a lot. It's weird because I hate Brandon. Brendan is just so much more reserved and dignified, somehow. I also like Brennan.
Calvin - Cool. I'd avoid it because of Calvinism.
Cyrus - The abusive husband in Glenn Beck's Christmas novel is named this. Umm anyway I also have a friend who's dating a Cyrus, and I like it more in real life than I do hypothetically, where it follows the (IMO) distasteful cheap old testament revival thing.
Dominic - does nothing for me
Ewan - It looks like snot and makes me stumble, phonetically
Gavril - What book did I read with Gavril "Ganya"? I liked it a lot then.
Hartley - It's OK. I think of Josh. Wouldn't mind meeting a Hartley, or a Hart, in real life.
Jonah - Same name as Asher. Were Asher and Jonah the two main characters of The Giver? I read that book again recently, and was struck by how perfectly inoffensive all of the characters were named. I wonder if Lowry was just picking names she liked, or purposefully named them inoffensive, cutting-edge yuppie names to make a point...?
Hosea - Eh, takes more guts than Jonah or Asher, and it's pretty. I wouldn't use it.
Riordan - Really awkward to say. Kinda cool on paper, but also very safely tasteful.
Sage - Interesting. Would be weird on a stupid person.
Theron - It's ok, not very namey to me
Kendal - Really ugly
Merrick - Sharp but seems plastic
Sebastian - I know a really cute Sebastian
Ezra - I know a really doofy Ezra. Poor kid! Anyway I'm not really into this as a name...
Rafe - I think it's cool. It would be cool to meet one my age.
