Ian ...
The name Ian has been on my mind lately. It's become fairly popular, which is a bit of drawback for me, but I still like it. WDYT?
Any drawbacks / negative connotations that you can think of?
Any positive associations you can think of?

I didn't used to care fot the name, until I met a little boy names Ian who was an absolute joy. I've been in love with it since.

Any drawbacks / negative connotations that you can think of? Hmm, there is always some person that mistakenly say EYE-an or insist that his name is pronounced EYE-an ala Ian Ziering, whom I find incredibly annoying. However, who even knows who he is anymore?
Any positive associations you can think of? I immediately think of Sir Ian McCellan (not quite sure on the spelling of his last name), who is an incredible actor.
Since I adore John, Ian just wouldn't work for me, but I don't find it particularly bad by any stretch of the imagination. To me it is not popular or overused, just well known. Its a strong and solid name, IMHO, that doesn't overwhelm a person.

I really do love the name Ian, almost more than Evan, Ewan and Owen but not quite as much as Jack! :) I also love the spelling Iain because it gives it a little depth I suppose, some added intrest, so it's not just three letters.
Well there's actor Ian McKellen who was in 'Lord of the Rings' amoung many other nice movies, so I see that as more of a possitive thing. I can't think of anyone from history right now but I'm sure there are some. The only drawback I know of is in the USA people almost tend to pronounce this like Anne instead of EE-an like it should be. I still love it a lot! :)

I like it very much. It's pretty popular, but I've never met an Ian IRL. :-/ I probably wouldn't use it, besides the popularity, there are so many other "-ian" names I like more. And having an Adrian or Julian or Sebastian, plus an Ian, would be redundant, imo. This is something the parents of the Dilley sextuplets did. I love the kids' names, and they seem like such a cool family, but I think Adrian, Julian, and Ian as brothers is just too much. BTW, the other kids are Quinn (boy), Claire & Brenna.

I like it. The Ian that I know is a pretty cool guy, quiet, into Dream Theater. The only negatives off the top of my head is that it looks like "lan" (Local Area Network [i think :-P]). It sounds really nice, imho.
