Re: Liz, as a nickname for Elizabeth and a survey
in reply to a message by Lily
I really don't like Liz as a nickname for Elizabeth. It's my least favorite nickname for Elizabeth, actually. I just think it sounds ugly.I have known two Elizabeths my entire life. One was a middle school friend that I had. She went by Beth and was never called Elizabeth. Another was a high school friend of my daughter's. She had no nickname---she was called Elizabeth. My middle school friend was my age, about a month older than I am, in fact, now that I think of it, I remember her birthday. It was June 3, so she's turning fifty-two today! The other Elizabeth was right around my daughter's age, so she's about thirty now, give or take a year.Oh, I sort of know one other Elisabeth, so there's an alternate spelling. A friend of my sister's. I only met her twice, but I used to hear about her quite a lot. She went by Lysa all of the time, and a lot of people didn't even realize that her name was actually Elisabeth. My sister didn't know it for a long time, and I didn't know it for a long time, and I remember that I was surprised when I found out. She would be about fifty now.The nicknames that I like are Eliza, Betty, and Betsy. The rest I don't care for. The ones that don't make sense to me are Buffy, Effy, and Lily. Those to me are just too much of a stretch. My parents considered naming me Elizabeth nn Beth, by the way, but in the end, obviously, decided against it.
