It's rather dated where I am (UK) as it was very popular in the '70s and '80s. It seems rather insubstantial, doesn't really do anything for me I'm afraid.
A few people have said it might be confused with Emma. Both names were popular at the same time in Britain and there were several Emmas and Gemmas at my school and I'm not aware of any of them having their names muddled up, but I could be wrong.
