I think a Lucinda would get Lucy more often than not. I actually prefer just Lucy to Lucinda though! I also think Ivy Lucinda flows better and would solve the "Lucy" problem for you!

I don't know about everyone, but I like the name Lucinda. Not such a fan of Ivy though and it doesn't really flow well w/ Lucinda.
As for avoiding Lucy, you may have to be insistent, but it will all depend on what the little Lucinda wants whether you wind up w/ a firmly insistent Lucinda or someone who wants to be called Lucy or Lu or Lulu or Cinda or something.

I love Lucinda with a nn of Lu. Most likely she would only end up being called Lucy if you started it since people generally take their cues from the parents. I know several Katherines who won't answer to Kate or Katie and they've managed just fine.

Lucinda is a gorgeous, dignified, friendly-sounding name. I don't think that Lucy is unavoidable. A lot of people go by their full names, so I think she would be fine. She can always correct people if they do call her by a nickname, but I've noticed that people tend to ask people if they go by nicknames when they first meet or shortly thereafter.

Well, Lucy is avoidable till Lucinda is old enough to have her own preferences and to make friends outside of the family. After that, you don't have much control over it, though of course you can still call her Lucinda yourself.

I don't like the name though. I think it's goofy, like she'd have a sister named Penelope and a pair of magic tap-dancing shoes or a talking guinea pig or something. Cartoonish in other words.

It's so hard to say whether or not a nickname is avoidable. Some people just naturally like to shorten names, and as long as the person doesn't object, they will. And if you had a Lucinda, she might not object, when she's older, and may even want to be called Lucy. That's why I always advise to avoid a name if one really hates any nickname for it. Although personally, I love Lucy and if I used Lucinda it would probably be with the intention of calling her Lucy.

No, it's not really avoidable.
It might be avoidable in childhood if you let her be called Cindy.
Once she's about 12, it'll just be a matter of whether you've psyched her into disliking Lucy.
I like Lucinda and Cindy but not Lucy also, and I would not consider it because of not liking Lucy.
