I love Charlotte, popular or not. I still remember meeting my first RL Charlotte years and years ago. She was about 5 years older than me, and she was graceful, pretty, shrewd, and didn't suffer fools gladly. I thought she wore her name really well.
I like both Lottie and Charlie, and I like how, no matter what a Charlotte's personality turns out to be, there is a nickname that would suit. If you can't stand Charlie, though, I agree Charlotte could be risky. I try not to believe in unavoidable nicknames, but Charlie seems to be today's trendy nickname of choice. That can make avoiding it harder.
