Dewey...for a girl
This is what we started calling my new niece after her sister couldn't get her name right. It stuck, and now everyone calls her Dewey. WDYT?

Appalling for either gender. It doesn't sound like a girls' name. And while Dewey is not even close to being popular for boys these days, it just sounds so juvenile. It sounds like the name of a little kid in a 1950s TV show or movie. And the little brother from Malcolm in the Middle doesn't help its case.

I'm not too keen on the sound of it, and don't care for it as a full name, but if there are plenty of girls and women who are nicknamed Alex, Sam, Sammy, Bobbi, and Chris, why not Dewey as a nickname as well? I think it would work well as a nickname for Davina.

Very Faulkner! Wasn't Dewey Dell the rather dim girl who kept fairies in her armpit?Or I suppose Donald Duck's nephew could get a look-in.By the way, what is her actual name? I've been trying to make Dewey sound almost, but not quite, like something else, and I can't!

That's cute as a nickname, but I'd hate it as a given name. It reminds me too much of the bumbling cop in Scream.

ok as a nn, I suppose... just glad it's not her real name.

Dewey has never really appealed to me, male or female. Although, if it is being used as a nickname, I have no existing objections-- in fact, it is somewhat charming, in a childlike-type way.- Francesca

Totally cute! My Mum, Dad and brother called me DeeDee until I was about 6 because my brother Michael couldn't say Elise/Lisey and somehow got DeeDee out of it. My Dad still calls me Dee on occasion, come to think of it. I think you might find the nickname will wane a bit once Sally can speak a little better or when Judy gets a bit older but it is adorable for sure!By the way, have they been able to do the dwarfism tests on Judy yet?

Thanks for asking. :)No, they haven't been able to run the tests yet. She needs to be 10 lbs, and she is just a little over five, so it will be a while. I will be sure to let you guys know when it happens, though.

I think it is a cute NN

It sounds really undignified.

I don't think nicknames necessarily have to be dignified. YMMV.

Guess it depends on the degree and manner of "undignified".

What is her real name, if you don't mind sharing? To be honest I dislike it for both gender. The sound is not appealing to me.

Her real name is Judy. :)

Is this the same baby that was maybe going to be Sofie and then maybe Claire?I have a friend named Dewey....she's in her 40's and it's her given name. I don't know the whys and wherefores......

Yes.

Judy's kinda refreshing compared to the other 2 possibilities... that have become kinda boring and overused. Though Judy isn't a major fave of mine, it's ok and I'm glad they went with something less common.

lol. Best-laid plans...I prefer Judy. There's something gruesome about the spelling Dewey. Is Dewy nicer? I like it more.

What's gruesome about it?Now that I think of it, I don't think I've seen any other spelling of the name.

I'm not sure. It's kind of weird. I hope someone knows what I'm talking about and can articulate it. It just seems like way too many letters separating those syllables, or something. An E on both sides of the W? And then a Y after the E?
lol. I dunno. Not gruesome as in grisly, just kind of gnarly.

Since it's not her given name, whatevs. I think nicknames that come from siblings/cousins unable to pronounce a baby's real name are totally cute.

Did you ever watch "Roseanne"? It reminds me of the episode where Jackie discovers that her given name is Marjorie, but that everyone called her Jackie because Roseanne did.

I didn't, but that's hilarious. My husband's whole family calls his Aunt Janet Aunt Dio because one of his cousins couldn't say Janet when she was little. Not sure how they got Dio out of Janet, but it stuck mostly because there's another Aunt Janet in the family too.

My friend's son used to call his sister Sophia "Fia" and I wound up calling her "Fi-chan" as a result... Then Fi-chan was calling younger sister Julia Jia, but I just can't bring myself to call a little girl "Ji-chan" because it's too close to ojiichan which means grandpa or old man.

My Aunts are Aunt Dunie and Aunt Poohie (like Pooh Bear) because of one of my cousins being unable to say Aunt Laurie and Aunt Gretchen when he was little :P
