Arnold
So lots of people recently (myself included!) have been mentioning Arthur lately. Also similar names like Alfred and Albert have been coming up more frequently.
I was just wondering what everyone things of Arnold. I think of it as the same category as Albert, Alfred and Arthur, but nobody seems to like it! Arnie is a nickname that would fit in with the many Alfies, Archies, Charlies etc. but I've never heard of a young one.
Any comments?
(p.s. I wouldn't use Arnold myself because of Rimmer from Red Dwarf (!) but I'm just wondering why nobody else likes it)

I find it abrasive-sounding.
Arnold is one of my favorite male names! I adore it.
Schwarzenegger is giving it a higher profile and not in a good way. As the recent governor of California. "girly men"
But the first thing I think of is the kid pig on the Kipper reruns that my kids watch, and the Kipper voice saying, "AH-nowld?" That makes me kinda like it more. I think it's better than Arthur, but has an unfashionable gurgly sound.

I'm assuming you live in the UK, because while we have a fair amount of Charlies of all ages in the US, we definitely don't have very many Alfies, and our Archies are likely to be over fifty at the youngest.
Arnold just has an old-man feel to it, even more so than Arthur and Alfred/Albert. And Arnie, to me at least, sounds like a 1950's misfit, the kind that wore a pocket protector and had terible zits.

Yeah I am in the UK :)
All I can think of is Arnold Schwarzenegger and no matter how much I love the Terminator movies he is not a good association. I also associate the nickname Arnie with him.
I quite like Albert, Alfred and Arthur and I agree that in theory, Arnold is in the same category, but I just don't feel it. Albert and Alfred and Arthur are sweet gentlemen. Arnold is macho and rude.
