For me, this name will forever be tied to the adorably, charmingly quriky character of Isola Pribby and her parrot Zenobia in "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". I love this book and the name fits the character to a tee.

But using it in real life? Nah, I just can't see that. All I see is the Italian word for island... I think it's just too eccentric for *me*.
Then again, Isla is used. I know, I know, different etymology, history, pronunciation and all that. I guess all I mean to say is... maybe it could work after all.

I much prefer Isolda or Isolde.

Unfortunately I can't get past the fact it means "island" in my native language, but maybe this wouldn't be an issue for non-Italian speakers.

I read this first as Isolde which is ok I guess. But Isola is all island to me and not particularly attractive as a person's name.

All I see is "isolation" when I look at it, which just makes me sad. :( I like Isolda better, or Iolanthe, or Iola, or Iona, or Isla.

How are you pronouncing it? iz-OH-lah or IZ-oh-lah?

If it's the first one, I think it's charming. :) I quite like it. Issy (prn izzy) could be a cute nn, but it isn't even necessary. I've never seen it before, so thanks!
