River
has been on my mind lately. Too hippy-ish? Silly? Boy or girl? Do you know anyone named River.

Love the name River, have for years. It is a hippy-esque name, but that doesn't bother me at all! I only like it for a boy and I've never met a River before.

I kinda like it in a GP sort of way. Had it as a joke nn at one point, but only because someone mis-heard me when I said my name and somehow thought I said River as part of my double name... I think it could maybe work on either gender if the personality fit it well.

I've never met one in real life, but River was my absolute favorite boy name at one point. It's faded a little but I still love it. It's a little hippyish, but I don't think it's overwhemlingly so.

I like the sound of it and it brings up some nice imagery, but it's a bit too stereotypically hippie for me.I don't know anyone named River.

I love River for a girl, and like it for a boy. I think it works well on both genders. Personally, I associate it with River Song from Doctor Who. Which is a great association for me. :)

Also, I can kill you with my brainTam & Phoenix, never met one IRL. It's not so bad, but not something I'd use.

The River I know is a 16-yr-old boy. (sibs Summer-f & Zephyr-m)

I don't know anyone named River, but I like it so far as word names go. I like it for both a boy or a girl, but for girls I think it's sweet doubled like River Jean or River June.

It's my dog's name...so I obviously like it! I don't know any human Rivers IRL and, like the other posters, I associate it most strongly with River Phoenix and River Tam from Firefly. My dog is male, but, for humans, I think I prefer River on a girl. It works well on either sex, though.

...Phoenix.Not that that makes it a bad name, but that's who it reminds me of.It's okay...very hippie-ish, which isn't really my style, but I wouldn't wrinkle my nose if I met one in real life.

I really love this name. I think it is more masculine... But could also be used for a girl. I dont think it is silly at all. I have only heard it because of the actor River Phoenix... But he was a great actor. I loved Stand By Me. :). It is a really nice name IMO.

It feels more masculine to me. It's a nice name, I think. Feels calm and strong, and if you really want to use a word nature name, it's a good option. Particularly in the middle name slot.I don't know anyone named River, though.

PhoenixHe's the only association I have with that name, and I'm sure a lot of other people do too. Not that it's a reason you should avoid the name.I don't see it as overly-hippy, nor is it silly. I think it's more masculine than feminine, but I don't dislike it on a girl. I see it as more of a "I want to name my kid a nature name and this is one of the few people don't think is weird" kind of name. Not particularly creative, a bit cliché.

I think its great on a boy. hippy-ish but not too "rainbow moonbeam".

FireflyRiver is the crazy girl in Firefly, played by Summer Glau.River Phoenix also comes to mind...I think it's good for either sex, and I adore hippie names so there is no such thing as too hippie imo.
