I've never thought of this as being a "cowboy" name and wonder if somehow the image of Clyde is unconsciously affecting you here. Empirically of course Clive is very British as it has been common in the UK but has almost never been used in the USA.

You know, I did consider that, but the thing is, Clyde doesn't conjure any cowboy imagery for me. I have a theory: It may have something to do with Clive Owen and that rugged, I-don't-care-that-I'm-three-days-away-from-my-last-shave look he usually has going.
