Riordan
How do you pronounce Riordan? I'm really liking it lately but I would like to know the 'correct' way to say it - if there is one :-)

It's REE (uhr) dun. The extra syllable in the middle is really slight, so it often comes out sounding like REAR-duhn (anglicization is Reardon). If you want to get technical, you roll the r's since it's Gaelic, but nobody seems to really do that when it's a last name at least.

Thanks, great explanation! this is how I originally thought it was pron. but then I heard it pron ree or den. and I wasn't so sure after that. It's lovely either way regardless

ree-ordan? or rordan? Either way, I don't like it... Of course, I also don't like Riannon and am not a big fan of Jordan, so that may be part of it. The reerdan prn. mentioned by someone else is even less attractive though and has definite teasing potential.

I don't know if it's correct, but all of my librarian co-workers and I pronounce it ROR-dan.ETA: I looked it up and apparently it's REER-dan. I guess I need to change my pronunciation.

I'm pretty sure the correct way to pronounce it is REER-den.

I love Riordan! I've heard it pronounced REE-or-dan, ree-OR-dan, and something more like ROR-dan. I think the last one is most correct... I'll be watching this thread though. I sort of gave up on it a while back because I think I liked a wronf pronunciation better than the real one.

REAR-denI love Riordan!
Like Norah Namenerd mentioned I think there is supposed to be an extra syllable in the middle, but its hard to explain eithout being able to pronounce it for you. It normally all rolls together into sounding liek REAR-den anyway.

Yeah, it's hard to explain. It's kinda like REER-er-den. That's the best way I can explain it.
