Nix sounds so negative, being a word meaning no, stop, or nothing depending on its usage, so I can't recommend that. I think the best choices would nicknames that sound somewhat similar to Phoenix, such Nick or Finn, or are just flat out unrelated, like Chip or Bud.

I probably wouldn't use a nn for a male Phoenix, to tell the truth. Or, if I did, I would just let it develop naturally, especially if it's just used by the family when at home.
