Both are ok with me. I don't think it matters whether you're French or not if you like the name... choose the spelling YOU prefer since both are acceptable... I wouldn't assume Margo was made up. Margot's ok too.

I prefer Margot, whose serene, unassuming elegance I deeply admire. It's so unpretentious in nature that I don't foresee you being denounced as pretentious for using it -- after all, famed British ballerina Margot Fonteyn wasn't French!

I'd still go with Margot, simply for the elegance. Margo seems very butch and unfeminine.

I know this is the most pretentious looking spelling of them all, but whenever I see Margo or Margot all I can think and see is maggot.

Margot would be my choice. I would think that most people would know how to pronounce it. And it's easy to learn if they don't. Margo looks incomplete and a little silly to me.

HOWEVER if you live in the US, in an area where not many people speak French, I would go for Margo to avoid having to constantly explain how to spell or pronounce it.

Margot wins hands down. It sounds and looks so elegant and royal. Have you ever read the book and/or seen the movie La Reine Margot? On here, everyone seems to think it's pretentious, but I really don't get that vibe at all. It feels so simple and demure to me.

That being said, if you are that worried about pronunciation, there isn't anything wrong with Margo. I'm French Canadian, and trust me... there are sooooooo many different ways of spelling Margot (Margault, Margaux, Margaud, etc.). Margot is far superior, imo, but I know several people who think Margot is outdated and that Margaux has a more youthful vibe to it.

I live in the West Coast and I would only spell it Margot. I grew up in a rural area and now live in a big city. Everyone I know would pronounce Margot correctly. I don't see the necessity for a phonetic spelling of a well known classic like Margot. Besides, visually Margo always reminds me of cargo.

Margot is a fantastic name. I'd love to meet a little Margot one day. If some people mispronounce it, then one correction is all they need. Learning something new won't harm them. No big deal.

You can't control how others view your name choices. There will always be some, even on these boards, who will disagree with anything you choose. That's always going to happen. You just have to please yourself and give your dd a name that (you hope) she can be happy with throughout her life. My bet is on Margot.

I like both. Margo is classic enough that people won't think it's made up; it's a legitimate enough spelling and most people know it's in use. But if you like Margot you should use it-- I know two Margots and almost everyone knows how to pronounce it.

I've encountered Margo more than I have Margot, so I doubt that people will think that Margo is made up. It's a widely accepted spelling.

I don't think that you need to be French to use Margot. I've encountered people who weren't French named Margot and didn't think anything of it. I don't think that Margot seems pretentious, but if you'd rather avoid pronunciation issues, go with Margo. It'll make things easier in the States. I'm sure that there are quite a few people who are at least familiar with Margot, so even if you used Margot, I don't think that it would be all that problematic.

I prefer Margot.

I go by Margot and it's usually pronounced the correct way. I shouldn't be much of a problem -- I also live on the West Coast. I think it's better than both Margo and Margaux (which reminds me of kitschy names like Brandy and Chardonnay...)

I live on the West coast. I had a Margot in my class through middle school and high school. My younger sister also had a Margot in her class in middle school but she often went by her mn.

In the movie Christmas Vacation there is a character named Margot. I've always known how to spell and say this name since I was fairly young. But I do feel it is a bit pretentious.

Margot and Glenys / Glynis / Glenis / Glennys / Glynnis / Glennis feel pretentious to me. I also feel like they'd make a good sibset. In my school they were good friends. Margot, Glynnis, Peggy and Raquel always hung out together since middle school. They were all the type of kids who did really well in school, though they started to slack off a bit senior year. They were smart kid type of pretentious, though only Julia and Peggy were really good at math. Julia and Peggy and sometimes Glynnis would have their noses stuck up high in the air, but only in middle school. Julia left after middle school. Peggy stopped sticking her nose up at others. Glynnis was always more of an artist type of pretentious. In high school they were the closest thing to a cool crowd in my class. Senior year Peggy, Margot, Glynnis, Raquel, Sonja, Alaina, Cambria, Liam and Rob would always be hanging out together during their free period in the parking lot. Everyone in my senior class would often hang out.

Margot would be mispronounced and I really dislike MAHR-got. However it is the correct German pronunciation and the way the name of Anne Frank's sister was pronounced.

Margo looks incomplete. I'd say neither, go with Margaux. Yes, you'd have to explain the pronunciation but it's prettier.
