Despina
This is the name of a spunky maid in Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutti. I really like it! Do you guys? What might you put in combos with it?

I really like Despina (and Despoina). Off the top of my head I like: Despina Ariadne, Despina Kalliope, and Despina Theodora.

I know someone with this name. She has Greek background. Not sure of combo's but I'd probably do something simple like Anne or Faith.

I like it. I think it sounds dark. Like it would be a really good name for a Vampire, and not the dumb kind that falls in love with humans. The kind that kills humans. Although I get this vampire vibe much more for Despoina. Despina is less ancient and unhealthy. I've never seen (?) Cosi Fan Tutti but I should. I like spunky maid characters.Despina Bernadette, Despina Alouette, Despina Louisette, Despina needs an -ette- name because those are the spunkiest.

Oh, Despoina is a good vampire name. It's going on the vampire list.Cosi Fan Tutti is on my list of things to see because I really like the song from it, "Rivolgete a Lui Lo Sguardo." And I like Mozart. I didn't know it had a spunky maid character though. Sounds fun.

I think it fits the character, but wouldn't really say I like it. I'm not often a fan of -ina names. I'd pair it with stuff sort of elegant but quirky, like:
Despina Annette
Despina Cecilia
Despina Fernanda
Despina Fiorenza
Despina Lalage
Despina Godiva, for some reason
That was really hard because too many names in that category also have "een" or "eena" in them. :/

Are there some positively associated words that begin with desp? Because Despin makes me think of despicable, desperate, despondent and the like.

The de- is the negative prefix from Latin in the words that you mentioned. A fair number of Latin words started with sp, so there are a number of negative English words that start with desp. Despoina is Greek and the meaning isn't quite as negative: http://www.etymologica.com/page5.htm

I kind of want to like it, but it makes me think 'despicable', 'despised', 'despair.' I'm sorry. What about Delphina instead?

I love Despina! She's brocaded but feisty.Despina Aurélie first came to mind; I also enjoy Despina Judith and Despina Florence.
