Well, well. Alexander looks and sounds, to me anyway, much closer to Alabaster than Alistair. And Alabaster is a surname, which might or might not be a good thing.

My nephew, Alexander Duncan Scottishln, was known as Zander when he was tiny: his big brother was famous for calling him BabybrotherZander, all in one breath. Then it expanded to Alexander, which it still is when he's naughty, and shrank again to Alex. Which is fine by me and it does suit him better than Zander, but my personal choice would be Alec, which he's never used at all.

I love Alexander and Alasdair. There are so many great nicknames for Alexander. I like Alex, Lex, Xan, and Xander.

I like Alexander, it's strong and a decent name. And I think using an unusual nn is a good way to make it more interesting.

My cousin Alexander went by Xander and Xand when he was a kid, and then changed to Alex when he started secondary school. I think Lex is also pretty cool.

My favorite nickname for Alexander is Sasha. I do like the obvious Alex, and I also like Lex and Ali. Xan/Zan is okay, but it wouldn't make my top three nickname choices.
