I like Charmian. I remember reading it on a different names board a long time ago and thinking it was weird, but I like it now. :) I agree with Array about it being feminine without being frilly. I didn't think of the toilet paper though.I like Charmian Louisa best. How about -Charmian June

Charmian is really beautiful--very feminine without being oh-la-la frilly. The similarity to Charmin could always be worse; she could be named LaTrina, right? Charmian is one of those names that's so nice that I'd use it and hope for the best.Charmian Laurel sounds best of the ones you've listed, I think. How about Charmian Liesl? (Kidding--that'd be cheesey beyond belief, I know.) In a similarly cheesey vein, I really rather like Ella Charmian, despite Ella's trendiness. Charmian Carr played an Ella in Sondheim's Evening Primrose, a televised musical that was aired only once.I'm not sure what else would sound nice with Charmian. It's a bit hard to place, for me.Array

The first thing that comes to mind is the actress who played Liesl in 'Sound of Music', then a greek goddess, even if it isn't so. Charmian Diana is lovely. (Diana is actually a great name, why haven't I seen that before?...)

It seems like it will be mispronounced quite a bit. I would imagine that most people would say either SHAR-mee-an or CHAR-mee-an. Both of those pronunciations remind me of Charmin (the toilet paper brand). Kahr-mee-an is kind of nice but I'm not sure about it. It sounds a bit masculine to me. Carmel seems more feminine to me. I really like Laurel, Helena, and Mara. Sophia is pretty as a middle name. It's gotten way too popular as a first name.

Nice to see someone else pronunce it right. :-)I really don't like it, mainly because its painfully close to a brand of toilet paper in the US. Charmian Sophia works best.

We have Charmin too (unfortunately!) ... mI was hoping, since the pronunciation is different, people wouldn't make the connection. But I'm sure that's wishful thinking ;-)_____________________________________________________________________Elinor
