I think it can work on its own. If Ellie can, why not Ally/Allie? I generally don't mind nicknames as full names.I prefer Allie to Ally. Ally looks a bit odd to me, and I think of the word "ally."I can think of four people named Allie, but I'm pretty sure I've met more than that. Two were named Alexis and Allison. I don't know about the other two, though. It's possible that at least one was just Allie. Alexis "Allie" is in her early twenties, Allison is in her mid twenties, one Allie is in her mid twenties, and the other one is probably in her fifties or perhaps late forties. Allison may have spelled her nickname Alli, but I can't remember. I knew her a long time ago, and she usually wrote her name down as Allison.I like Allison. Alison is decent, but I've always preferred Allison.I don't find Ally/Allie too dated.
