I like the association with the poet, but I'm not too keen on the sound of the name. It's hard not to think of "tennis shoe" and "venison."

Short classic names seem to sound the best with Tennyson. I included some others as well, though.

I really like the feel it gives me, largely due to the poet association. I'd love it as a middle name for a boy. Or even a first name with a nn like Tenn or Tenny. Tenny would be a cute nn for a girl too, but I'd absolutely despise Tennyson on a girl...

Tennyson was a stodgy old Victorian. Why keep that going? How about Auden? :)

I like Tennyson a lot! (In fact, thanks for reminding me, I kind of forgot about it for a while.) I'd only ever consider using it on a boy. And I'd consider Ten or Tenny as nicknames, although one could also do Sonny.

It really seems kind of weird and more like GP territory to me. I know it is a boy name but I know from other boards that is already being put on girls like Addison and Madison. It sounds too much like Tennessee to me and it also reminds me of tennis shoes. I can't really think of good nickname. Sonny maybe is a possibility but Tenny still sounds like shoes and Ten is a number.

A rugby player here in New Zealand has a son named Tennyson and ever since I heard it in a news item about his family I really liked it. I don't think I would ever use it myself but I would love for someone else to use it.

Ten or Tenny are cute nicknames but are very 'pet' names if that makes sense, not nicknames that you would ever use to introduce yourself. I think Tennyson on its own is lovely.

I love it! It's a recent love though and it's definitely a GP. I would personally never use it but I would love to meet a little Tennyson.
Tennyson is strictly male to me and I don't think I would use any nickname but Tenny is okey.

I don't like it. It just looks weird and to my ears sounds weird as a first name. I find Tenny fairly silly as well. Also off the top of my head it's the name of Russell Crowe's young son, so the possibility of celebrity influence irks me a little bit there, but no one else has mentioned it so that might just be me and my collection of obscure facts.

Can't really elaborate on why I can't warm up to Tennyson, but it's not for me.

I like Tennyson best as a middle name. It can still work as a first name. I think it's a boy's only name. Not a unisex name to me. I think Tennyson would work with short classic names, but only if you're using Tennyson first. Maybe German names, too. I like Tennyson and I'm glad it's not overly popular. I have yet to actually meet a Tennyson.

I'm pretty neutral. I don't particularly like surnames as first names, but it's kind of charming. On a boy though. Dear god, only on a boy.

If you really love Alfred Lord Tennyson then it's great

Unless it's a family name, my honest opinion is that you're trying a little hard to find something "unique". Having an extremely uncommon name isn't always a good thing.

Well, I think the trends would suggest that people would start using this for a girl (think Addison, Emerson) but I personally like most last-names-as-first-names on boys.

Tennyson doesn't have bad connotations, but very literary ones (obviously) so if you think he would be a jock, it could be considered a bit weird. Of course, if he were artsy it could be a bit much on him as well.

Nicknames...are tough. I guess that's good if you don't want to use a nickname!
Tenny doesn't sound great, and reminds me of Penny, which is feminine. Tenn/Ten would be okay I suppose, but it's...a number.

It would help to know your other boys' names to see if it melds well with theirs. Same with your last name.

I think the obvious connection it Lord Alfred Tennyson, it seems a little eye-roll pretentious to me unless it's a family name. Im not trying to be rude, just an honest opinion if I were to hear it but I know some very "bougie" named people that I dont really think about in real life.
