I've seen Albie used in Britain as a stand-alone name but then nicknamey names are popular here. A friend of a friend has a son called Albie but his full name is actually Albert, he's just never been called that. Anyway, I think Alby could work if you really like it.

I thought of Albus, Albion, Alba, Albany first, not a first name or Albert.

Alby is cute and certainly much better than Albert. I usually don't do this, but I'm gonna say it's usable as a full name.

Oh, I adore Alby! Albert is my go-to full name, though. While I suppose it could stand on its own, I think it should have a more formal name on which to fall back (e.g. Alban / Albin, Albus, Albrecht, etc.).

I don't think it could really stand that well on it's own.

Also, on the tv show Big Love, one of the main villains was named Albert, and went by Alby, So that's really the only association I have.

I think it's a bit nicknamey to be used alone. However, plenty of people use Alfie, Archie, Charlie etc. as names in their own right (especially here in the UK), so I don't think Alby is much different. I would spell it Albie - It just looks better to me.
