How about Matilde? That's the Italian/Spanish form. (Frida Kahlo's mother was named Matilde.)

I think Mathilde would work fine in the UK - are you pronouncing it in the same way as Matilda or the french way?

If you were going to pronounce them the same anyway, I would just go with Matilda to make it easier, as the pronounciation is more intuitive.

I think Mathilde would work in the U.K., but I much prefer Matilda personally.

I like them both. Lately I've found myself more drawn to Mathilde for two reasons:

1) it's less popular than Matilda (which is very popular here)
2) the guy I went out with/going out with loves Tilde, and I got him to agree on Mathilde instead
