I think it depends on the name. Ron and Ben are just weird. I knew a Bennie (it was short for Bernadette or Bernadine or something), and that was kind of OK, but Ben... whatever. The two Gabriell(a)'s I knew called Gabe were just totally disconcerting. Ditto for the little girl I know called Theo (Theodora I think?). Leave the boys' name to the boys-- there are plenty of girls' names out there!
