Bella
I have been thinking about changing my name, to varying degrees of certainty, for the last ten years. Now that I'm going into my senior year of college, the thoughts are much more serious. The only problem, really, is the name itself. About five years ago I got hooked to the name Bella. I filled 'Bella' in on fake tests, I introduced myself as 'Bella' to people I knew I'd never see again. I've never been able to find another name since that I set into so easily, despite the fact that it goes against all my naming tastes. Mostly, I can't get over the arrogance of naming myself, literally, 'beautiful' - especially when I'm not exactly a supermodel. I would probably change my name to Isabella, and go almost exclusively by Bella, but I'm not sure that makes it any better.
So, my question for you guys is a two-parter:
1) Do you think it's unforgivably arrogant to change your own name to Bella?
2) If I like Isabella nn Bella, what other names might make the cut?

Definitely not. Bella does mean beautiful, but I don't think it's arrogant because it's a common name and the meaning isn't really really obvious. Not like actually calling yourself "beautiful" in English!

Isabella is so common, so you could choose a more interesting name which can also use the nickname Bella, such as Arabella or Annabel

I don't think it's arrogant. I don't even think the trendyness matters because Bella wasn't popular for your age group. If you like it and it is what feels most comfortable to you, go for it.
1. I don't think it's 'unforgivably arrogant', but I think it's cheesy and trendy. 'Twilight' has made the name Bella a bit groan-worthy to anyone over 12.
2. I can't tell you that. Do you like frilly, very feminine names? Regal names? Classic ones? It's all up to you.

The trendiness doesn't bother me so much. I liked the name before Twilight, and I'll like it well after the popularity dims. The cheesiness part does worry me, though. That's even worse than arrogance in a way.
Well, as long as YOU love it, that's all that matters. If I were going to change my name, I wouldn't give a damn what anyone else thought.
haha, true enough. Thanks for your input!
I have to ask, what is your first name now, if you don't mind answering? If it's something truly ghastly, I'd say, go for it. But Bella is a little trendy for my taste. I think it will date itself.
It's Shannon; not exactly ghastly, but it always made me cringe. Especially with the nasally way people pronounce it around here.
