Ernest
This is one of my favorite boys' names. I think it sounds very handsome. I don't care the nickname Ernie; I just like Ernest by itself.
What do you think of Ernest?

It's my DH's first name, and his father's before him, though neither of them has ever used it. So I've got mixed feelings built in!
I find the hesitant Er ... beginning a turn-off. The German Ernst pleases me much more.

I don't care for it at all. It was the name of my husband's grandfather but one I would never consider using. It makes me think of ear nest. It doesn't have a pleasant sound to me.
I also think it would be inevitable that in middle school/high school, he would get called Ernie. And then the "Where's Bert?" jokes would start.
However it wouldn't be so bad as a middle name & then you could avoid Ernie.

I know an Ernest who's about 20. Great guy. I think the name's not bad. I wouldn't use it, but I'd enjoy seeing it on someone else's kid. I think he'd really have to have the right personality to pull Ernie off well.
Oh yes!!! Ernest is my absolute favourite male name. For some reason it doesn't seem to be very popular. It's really handsome and gentle. It's pleasantly dated, like Clara or Alice, and I think it suits someone of any age and has a kind of dreamy nostalgic feel. I like that it seems very English but works in many languages. Ernest is totally a gentleman explorer. And I think the meaning is great. Ernie is OK and Ern is cute too, although I prefer just Ernest. It's a name I would think about using. The only thing that bothers me slightly is the word nest in the name. It's worse if you spell it Earnest.
Oh, and Ernie reminds me of Morecambe and Wise :)

I like Ernest, and I love Earnest!
I think it would make an adorable name for a girl.
Just kidding! I never listen to Pam & Linda. :)
For a boy? I don't like it. Reminds me of the, "Hey, Vern! It's Ernest!" guy.

lol... and also ditto, except
I do like it if it's spelled Earnest because then it makes me think of The Importance of Being Earnest, which I love. And it seems more open and elegant then.
And for what it's worth, when you stick een on the end (Ernestine), I enjoy the awkwardness mixed with the elegance.
Actually on top of the Jim Varney Ernest association, I had a Great-Uncle Ernest who was always kind of scary!

Nice. :o)
Agree!!!! I love Ernest. I am not a huge fan of Ernie though. I think I would be, but I have a bad association.
