I live in the US, and I pronounce it "mo-REES". I don't think pronouncing it like
Morris
makes sense.

then it does make more sense, no? I'm in the U.S. and pronounce it the same way you do. But I can definitely see
Maurice
's simiarlity to
Morris
.
