Funny you should mention this because it keeps popping into my head lately too. My thoughts:
It has a nice sound and a nice look. It feels soft and sweet, but not overly frilly because I can tie it to ginger root. If I liked ginger more, I might like the name more. Not that I dislike ginger. But I digress. I don't mind the ginger slang term because I love red haired/pale skinned/freckled people. I always wanted to look that way when I was a kid.
I think as a fn though it has too much potential to feel overly frilly or tacky (which is how I used to feel about it in any context), and so I prefer it as a nn for Virginia. Although there are other nns for that I love even more, so I don't seriously consider using it.
