I think it could be kind of cute. I've never thought of Murphy as a "people-name" before - having known two dogs by this name. But it would be pretty cool on a little boy. And I can see the cute-sy-ness of it on a girl too. While I don't think it would be a very solid name longterm, it certainly has great potential as a nickname. Let me see here, what about as a nickname for a fn with the "mur" sound and a mn with the "fee" sound:

I kinda like Mercedes Fiametta nn Murphy. :o)
