Sem
I just came across the name Sem. I've never heard of it before but apparently it's the number one name for boys in The Netherlands for 2010.What do you think?
I like it better as a nickname... what full names could it be a nickname for?

I actually have a story with lead characters named Cas, Sem, and Luca.I've never thought of it as a nickname, but I guess if I used it as a short form of something I'd think maybe Simeon (Semyon?) or even September. Salem comes to mind, but I'm not liking it for Sem.

I had no idea that it was so popular over in the Netherlands, but then again, I haven't looked at the name lists over there in years. I can't say I really like it all that much. Around here (I live in the U.S,), I'm pretty sure most people would mistake it for Sam.The first full name for Sem that came to mind was Simeon.

It's Dutch for Shem, the son of Noah!I suppose if you wanted it to be a nickname, you could stretch it to Septimus ... but it would be a stretch.

For me Sem is very neutral name, and because of that it might work best as nickname. First possible full names for Sem that came to mind were Samuel and Samson. It could also work for Seymour, September and Septimus. Maybe even Severin.

I only like it as a nn. Maybe for Anselm?

I've heard the name before (as it is one of Noah's sons, Shem in English?), but I've never heard it on a real person and have never really thought of it. I like it, but I think it sounds better as a nickname too. I have no idea for what, though.
