I don't mind Killian, but I'd never use it. Joe, on the other hand, has always seemed like the friendliest nn imaginable; so I'm with your DS all the way.
It's a stage they sometimes go through: we went on holiday once with our DS and his great-aunt, and he decided (at age about 8/9) to introduce himself to his new friends as David (his first mn) instead of Peter. They accepted this happily of course, but Auntie was seriously confused when eager little boys turned up at the door asking if David could come out and play ...
